Handmade Halloween Magic: DIY Paper Mâché Pumpkin Bucket

This cheerful little paper mâché pumpkin wasn’t just a fun homeschool project. It became a sweet reminder that the best decorations are the ones we make with our own two hands.

Whether you're looking to create a trick-or-treat bucket, a centerpiece, or just a cute fall friend to brighten up a shelf, this DIY paper mâché pumpkin is a charming and kid-friendly project that reuses everyday items and brings a whole lot of joy.

What We Used:

 A balloon (the base shape)

Newspaper strips (recycled from our junk mail pile)

Paper mâché paste (1 part flour to 1 part water + a dash of salt)

 Orange, and black acrylic paints

 Ribbon for the handle

Black marker or paint for the face

 Optional: Mod Podge for sealing

How We Made It:

1. Inflate the Balloon
Blow up your balloon to your desired pumpkin size. Ours was just right for holding candy or little toys!

2. Prepare the Paste
Mix flour, water, and a pinch of salt until it forms a pancake-batter consistency.

3. Layer the Paper
Dip newspaper strips into the paste, wipe off the excess, and smooth onto the balloon. Continue layering until fully covered (about 3 layers for durability). Let dry overnight.

4. Pop & Trim
Once dry and firm, pop the balloon and remove it. Cut a jagged "top" opening for your pumpkin bucket.

5. Paint & Decorate
Paint the entire surface orange. Let dry, then add a sweet face using black paint. We went with a kawaii-style jack-o’-lantern, complete with a wink!

6. Add a Handle
Use scissors or a hole punch to create two holes near the top edge. Tie in a festive ribbon or yarn for a handle—ours was a shiny orange that matched perfectly!

7. (Optional) Seal with Mod Podge
If you'd like a glossier finish or extra durability, a layer of Mod Podge does the trick.

You could use this idea and run with it, add wings for a bat, ears for a cat!

Hope you enjoy making this sweet pumpkin!
