Homeschool Activity: Story and Fabric Collage Inspired by A Chair
Book: A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams
Ages: Preschool–Elementary
Subjects: Language Arts, Art, Life Skills, Social-Emotional Learning
Objective
Children will explore themes of family, saving, generosity, and comfort while practicing fine motor skills and creativity by designing their own “special chair” collage.
Materials
A Chair for My Mother (book)
Assorted fabric scraps (different textures, colors, and patterns)
Cardstock or construction paper (sturdy backing)
Glue stick or white school glue
Child-safe scissors
Optional: crayons or markers for extra detailing
Activity Steps
1. Read & Discuss
Read A Chair for My Mother aloud.
Pause to discuss the story’s main themes: working together, saving for something special, and the comfort of home.
Ask: “If you could design the most comfortable chair in the world, what would it look like?”
2. Explore Fabrics
Show children the fabric scraps and let them feel the textures.
Discuss how the fabrics’ colors and textures might make a chair cozy or beautiful.
3. Create the Chair Collage
On the cardstock, lightly sketch a simple outline of a chair (optional for younger children; they can just build shapes).
Cut fabric pieces to fit parts of the chair — seat, arms, cushions, etc.
Glue fabric pieces in place, overlapping slightly to create a patchwork effect.
4. Add Personal Touches
Use crayons or markers to add details: legs of the chair, pillows, patterns.
Encourage kids to name their chair and describe where it would be in their home.
5. Share & Reflect
Have children present their “special chair” to the group or family.
Prompt reflection: “Why did you choose these colors and textures?” or “Who would you invite to sit in your chair?”
Learning Extensions
Math: Count fabric pieces or measure them before cutting.
Social Studies: Talk about different types of chairs and furniture around the world.
Life Skills: Discuss saving for something important and how teamwork helps reach goals.
Homeschool Connection
This activity blends literature, art, and emotional learning in one meaningful lesson. It gives children space to imagine, design, and connect the story’s heartwarming message to their own lives.
We had alot of fun building our chair together and we hope you do too!
