Nighttime lantern walks & Martinmas celebration
Nighttime walks are a treasured part of Waldorf education. As the days grow shorter, children are invited to slow down, notice the world after dark, and carry a small light into the evening. Lantern festivals, often celebrated around Martinmas honor the idea that each of us carries an inner light of kindness and warmth, even as the season becomes darker.
Taking a nighttime walk doesn’t need to be elaborate. A short stroll with a handmade lantern turns an ordinary evening into a moment of magic. Children naturally become quieter, more observant, and more connected to the rhythms of nature.
Below is a simple Waldorf-inspired lantern craft you can create for your own evening walk.
Repurposed Jar Lantern Craft
Materials
Clean glass jar
Tissue paper
Glue + water mixture
Brush
Twine, yarn, or pipe cleaners
Battery tea light
Steps
1. Prepare the Jar
Wash and dry your jar.
2. Add Tissue Paper
Tear or cut tissue paper. Brush glue on a small section of the jar and press the pieces on, overlapping them. Seal with a light coat of glue.
3. Make the Handle
Tie twine or yarn around the rim and create a loop handle, or twist two pipe cleaners together and attach to the sides.
4. Let It Dry
Set aside until fully dry and translucent.
5. Add Light
Place a battery tea light inside and enjoy the warm glow.
A simple lantern and a quiet walk can create the sweetest seasonal rhythm, reminding children that their light matters. Even on the darkest nights.
Enjoy! Chloe
