Nest Nature Study-Project
Our Nature Study on Nests
We began by reading about how birds build nests—how some use twigs and grasses, while others gather moss, feathers, spiderwebs, even animal fur. We learned that each species has its own nest style and preference, but the goal is always the same: create a safe, cozy space for their eggs and babies.
We looked at photos and videos of nest-building in action, how birds instinctively weave, press, and shape with only their beaks and feet. It's truly an art form.
Hands-On Activity: Build Your Own Nest
Inspired by our feathered friends, we headed outside on a nature walk searching for materials we thought a bird might use:
Twigs, pine needles, and dry grasses
Leaves, moss, and bark
Feathers and fluff
Any random materials a bird may pick up along the way
Back at home, we cleared the table and started to build. Just fingers, pressure, and imagination. Our nests were round and shallow. We nestled small stones inside to represent eggs. And took the nest outside to balance it between branches.
The challenge of making something stable and soft with only natural materials gave us a whole new respect for birds. They’re not just builders, they're artists!
If you'd like to try this activity:
Read a book or watch a short documentary clip about how birds build nests.
Go on a nature walk and collect materials together.
Encourage open-ended building—no right or wrong way.
Display your nests somewhere special, and maybe even watch your local birds a little more closely next time you're outside.
Happy homeschooling,
Chloe
