Where The Wild Things Are Mask Activity

This week in our homeschool rhythm, we leaned into whimsy and the wonderful mind of Maurice Sendak with a simple, joy-filled craft: a “Where the Wild Things Are” mask made from everyday materials. I had as much fun as my son creating this fun piece!

What You’ll Need

1 paper plate (or) Cardboard circle cutout

Black and brown yarn (or whatever colors your Wild Thing wants to be)

Construction paper, felt or fabric scraps

Black marker

Glue stick and/or tacky glue

Scissors

A hole punch and string (if your child wants to wear the mask)

Step-by-Step: Making Your Own Wild Thing

1. Create the Hair:

Cut strips of black yarn and glue them to the top edge of the paper plate. Let it hang loose for that wild, unruly look. This step is messy and marvelous—let little hands take the lead.

2. Build the Face:

Use felt or construction paper to cut out eyes, a nose, a mouth, pointy teeth, horns. Don’t worry about symmetry—Wild Things aren’t perfect, and that’s the charm.

3. Layer the Details:

Glue the facial features onto the plate or Cardboard layering to give it dimension. Use a black marker or felt to draw in eyes, brows or lines for expression.

4. Add More Yarn for Fur:

Glue longer strips of yarn around the edges to create a furry mane. This part is slow and repetitive—perfect for mindfulness.

5. Personalize It:

Encourage your child to draw freckles, scars, or wild whiskers. There’s no wrong way to be a Wild Thing.

6. Try It On:

Punch holes in the sides and tie string or elastic if your little one wants to wear it. Alternatively, use it for dramatic play or hang it on the wall as art.

Hope you enjoy this fun activity with your Wild Thing!
