Drawing with Feet: Silly, Sensory Art Practice
Drawing with Feet: A Silly, Sensory Art Practice
Some days, art is about color and beauty and other days, it’s about giggles, balance, and trying something completely new! This week, we explored drawing with our feet, a wonderfully silly and creative exercise that helps children loosen up, engage their whole bodies, and see art in a playful new way.
This simple activity encourages coordination, body awareness, and fine motor skills, just not in the usual way! It’s also a great way to remind children (and us grown-ups!) that creativity isn’t about perfection, it’s about expression and fun.
🌈 You’ll Need:
Large sheets of paper (butcher paper or recycled cardboard work great)
Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
Tape (to keep paper from sliding)
Optional: music to move and draw to
How to Play:
1. Prepare Your Space
Tape down your paper on the floor to keep it steady. Make sure there’s plenty of room for wiggly toes and happy movement!
2. Pick Your Tools
Choose crayons or markers that are easy to grip between toes. You might even try paintbrushes if you’re feeling adventurous.
3. Ready, Set, Draw!
Place your art tool between your toes and begin to draw. Try writing your name, making shapes, or doodling freely.
4. Add Some Music
Turn on a fun song and let the rhythm guide your movements. See how the music changes your lines and shapes!
5. Observe and Laugh Together
Talk about how it felt. Was it tricky? Funny? Did your lines look different than when you draw with your hands?
6. Display the Masterpieces
Let the finished works dry (if using paint) and then hang them proudly. We are saving our art as Christmas wrapping paper.
Learning Through Play
Activities like this one invite children to think differently about their bodies and creativity. They build confidence, patience, and a sense of humor, all while strengthening those growing muscles. Most importantly, it reminds us that art is about joy and exploration, not rules.
I hope you enjoy this think outside the box activity as much as your child!
