Trick-or-treat Candy Counting Graph
Trick-or-Treat Candy Graphing Activity
After trick-or-treating, we spread out our candy haul and turned it into an exciting math activity! Using our Candy Count and Candy Graph worksheets, the boys practiced sorting, counting, and recording data — all while giggling about who had the most chocolate or the fewest “eyeball” candies.
You’ll Need
Printed Candy Count and Candy Graph worksheets (at bottom of page)
Crayons or markers
A small pile of Halloween candies **(or printout candies for younger learners)** Attached at bottom
Pencil for tallying
Step-by-Step
1. Candy Count
Begin by looking at the Candy Count page. Count how many of each candy type you see — Reese’s, eyeballs, Smarties, M&Ms, and Twizzlers.
Write the total number for each candy or make tally marks beside them.
2. Record the Data
Talk about what you notice.
Which candy shows up the most?
Which one is the rarest?
3. Graph It!
Move to the Candy Graphing page. Color in one box for each candy you counted. For example, if there are 6 Twizzlers, color 6 boxes in that column.
Encourage your child to use a different color for each candy type.
4. Compare and Reflect
Once the graph is filled, ask a few thinking questions:
Which bar is the tallest?
How many more Reese’s than Smarties?
Can you tell the total number of candies by adding them together?
5. Optional Extension Ideas
Sorting & Real Candy: Use real Halloween candy to make your own graph.
Sweet Patterns: Arrange candies into repeating color or shape patterns.
Candy Fractions: For older learners, talk about fractions (e.g., “½ of your candy is chocolate”).
Learning Focus:
Counting and number recognition
Comparing quantities
Beginning graphing and data representation
Observation and critical thinking
** You can use whatever treats for your graph just cut off the bottom section.
** If you dont have candy to graph or dont feel like having a midday sugar party the attached candy picture worksheet makes this activity just as fun!
Happy Halloween!
