Worm “Farm” Observation Jar Earth Day activity π πͺ±
Watching the hidden world beneath our feet come to life is so interestingand fun! This simple worm farm activty invites children to observe, and connect with the rhythms of the earth in a hands-on way.
What You’ll Need
A clear jar or container
Dirt
Leaves torn into small pieces (if you can use a food processor or blender!)
A few worms
A piece of dark paper (large enough to wrap around your jar)
How to Create Your Worm Farm
Begin by adding alternating layers of dirt and finely blended leaves to your jar. Let the dirt layers be a bit thicker, this not only creates a nourishing environment for your worms, but also makes their winding tunnels easier to see later on.
Once your layers are complete, gently wrap the outside of the jar with dark paper. Worms naturally shy away from light, so this step encourages them to move along the edges of the jar– right where their tunnels will eventually be visible to curious eyes.
Now for the most exciting part! Carefully add your worms to the top layer of soil. Place your jar in a quiet spot (out of direct sun and water exposure) and allow your worms time to settle in and begin their work. Try to leave them undisturbed for a day or two (this can be the hardest part!).
When the time feels right, (about 3 days) unwrap the paper and take a peek. You’ll be able to see the delicate tunnels your worms have created as they move through the soil, breaking down organic matter and helping the earth in their own small but powerful way.
This simple activity is a gentle introduction to decomposition, soil health, and the important role even the smallest creatures play in our ecosystem. Perfect for earthday! Happy spring!
